Passings

AAC lost two much-loved members of the fellowship this May.

Jim Ohler passed on May 17, not long after entering hospice care. An informal (Club gathering) memorial/tribute was held for him at St. Luke’s the following week, attended by his friends, sponsees, and Jim’s sponsor. Three years clean and sober at the end of his life, he was remembered as a selfless friend, who both carried and practiced a strong AA message and was a living example of the program. He was always the first to sign up to volunteer for Pride and other Club events, and proudly helped to carry the Atlantic Alano banner in the Pride Parade. He was also remembered for his beautiful blond hair, as one friend shared that, upon entering the hospice, when asked if there was anything he needed, Jim did a quick visual check and quipped, “No, I’ve got my blow dryer.” We miss you, Jim.

Paula Lutz was also lost during this time period. With our apologies, those of us involved in this writing have no information or personal knowledge of Paula, though we, of course, extend our condolences to her family and loved ones.

If anyone close to Paula wishes to send a memory or tribute to us, we will gladly and respectfully publish it here.

Pride Abounding

Pride weekend, carrying the theme, “I am what I am,” has come and gone, and with it the joyously sober reflections of one alcoholic who both attended the festival and volunteered there to earn money for the Atlantic Alano Club. Janice H. responded over and over to the question, ARE YOU? “I am what I am. I belong.”

Janice further shared, “…in the spirit of and connection to society through a festival of events, sights, and smells of popcorn and cotton candy, the event fills us with sober memories instead of drunken ones. The unity of the AAC brought me to a way of celebrating a festival with a new sense of clarity. ARE YOU? I am what I am. I am so straight, yet so gay.” Thank you Janice.

Thank you, as well, to all who donated or volunteered at Pride on behalf of the Club. Our records cannot account for the names of those who gave to the Club in this way (we shall never be organized); however, you all know who you are, and we want you to also know how greatly your contributions are appreciated. Gay Pride is not only one of the two largest revenue-enhancing events for the city of Long Beach, it is one the AAC’s two greatest annual fundraisers as well.

AAC members and friends enjoyed a pre-parade reception and parade front- row seats at the home of Todd T. on Ocean Boulevard. The reception was attended by Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, as well as by other city officials, including Parade Grand Marshal, 2nd District (AAC’s District) Council Member Suja Lowenthal. Before reaching, and at our choice spot, near the Parade’s end, Mayor Foster was out of his car and shaking as many hands as he could reach out to, on both sides of the street.

Next Sober Event: AAC’s Annual Beach Party

AAC’s third annual Beach Party is going to happen! We are hoping to schedule it for the last week in July, but have to check on other events scheduled at Bolsa Chica for that day. Watch for the exact date to be posted on this Website any minute now.

Annual Yard Sale

Start going through your “stuff you don’t need anymore” and setting it aside for our next fundraiser, the biggest one all year, the AAC annual yard sale. It is scheduled for September this time around.
